Community-Based Mentoring
The Community-Based program is the "traditional" approach to the mentoring of children. Mentors in this program are asked to commit to one year of continuous quality mentoring, consisting of 2-5 hours spent with the child every-other week; contact should be maintained with the child on weeks that the match is not meeting. In this program, mentors spend time with the children participating in a variety of activities: sports, academic support, going to the park, watching movies, attending sporting events, hobbies and crafts, or just talking. the most important part of mentoring in this, or any, program is being accountable and consistent. Our matches are successful because we pair individuals based on a variety of common interests, location, likes and dislikes. In this way, we are able to bypass some of the initial barriers to starting a friendship and are able to allow our matches the ability of starting out on common ground. One special component of our Community-Based program is the introduction of "Mentoring Children of Prisoners". This program is designed to help children affected by the current incarceration of a family member or adult. Through this program, mentors are trained in identifying the key risk factors associated with these children. There is no difference in the services offered or the support given to clients and mentors. to be eligible for this program, children must be between the ages of 4 and 16, and must have a family member currently incarcerated. For eligibility requirements or questions regarding who is considered a family member, please feel free to contact us.
